Public speaking is a fundamental skill in everyone’s personal and professional life, but for many people, it represents a significant challenge to overcome. The fear of “being on stage” can be a considerable and sometimes limiting obstacle. However, it is possible to overcome this sensation with the right mindset and appropriate techniques.

The fear of speaking in public can be caused by various factors: let’s examine in detail some of the most common ones. Many people suffer, even at mild levels, from social anxiety, which is anxiety and insecurity in social interaction situations. For this category of people, speaking in public can be a very intense experience because they feel constantly observed and judged. Among the most common symptoms associated with this phenomenon, we can mention hand tremors and profuse negative thoughts related to the audience’s judgment. Another cause of discomfort is related to particularly self-critical people with unrealistic expectations of themselves. These individuals believe they must be perfect and cannot make mistakes during the presentation, which generates enormous pressure and widespread anxiety. But what are the symptoms of the fear of public speaking? Generally, we distinguish between two categories: physical and emotional. Among the physical symptoms, we can mention an increase in heart rate, excessive sweating, and tremors in the hands or voice. Furthermore, some people perceive a shortness of breath, nausea, or a sensation of butterflies in the stomach. Among the most common emotional symptoms, we can mention anxiety, terror, panic, nervousness, a sense of shame, or embarrassment. The first step in addressing and overcoming the fear of public speaking is recognizing the causes and symptoms examined.
