I Read Elon Musk’s Epic Biography —  Here’s What I Learnt…

Elon Musk by Walter Isaacson

Goodreads

Elon Musk is one of the most recognisable people on planet earth.

From owning Tesla, SpaceX, Neuralink, The Boring Company and now Twitter/X, he is pushing the boundaries of science and innovation to places we’ve never seen before.

He’s a phenomenal man.

You might not necessarily like him, but you have to respect him and his work.

So without further ado, here’s what I learnt from Elon Musk by Walter Isaacson…

Have the right people around you

There’s not really any denying that Musk is a bit of an asshole, especially as an employer.

He is known for expecting people to work 7 days a week. He shouts at, belittles and intimidates people. He fires people on the spot. He’s even laid off around 80% of the workforce at Twitter. He feels that his missions are so important, feelings don’t really matter.

Musk is brutal, but he’s able to quickly siphon out the people who share the same visions and goals as he does, from those who don’t.

Whilst I could never in a million years treat people in the same manner to what Elon does, I do agree with the principles in surrounding yourself with the right kind of people.

Never give up… EVER

I’m not sure there will be anyone on this planet who’s failed more times, or failed more epically than Elon Musk has done in the past.

The early years of SpaceX were rife with failures. The first three rocket launches failed, they exploded shortly after taking off. Musk himself estimated that the company had only one launch left before running out of funds, luckily that launch was successful.

In 2008, Tesla was a whisker away from collapsing. The company was set to run out of money on Christmas Eve, with neither Tesla nor Musk personally having enough funds to cover the next payroll, they were both broke. Luckily personal loans from friends helped the company to survive.

Elon literally doesn’t have it in him to quit, it’s not in his DNA. It’s his unbelievable never say die…
