Artist Q&A — Lonnie Nadler

Artist Q&A — Lonnie Nadler

Black Stars Above by Lonnie Nadler, art by Jenna Cha, colors by Brad Simpson, design by Tim Daniels, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou on letters. This month’s artist is writer & filmmaker Lonnie Nadler. In addition to writing for HuffPo and Vice, he has a successful career in comics working on household names like Spider-man and X-Men as well as critically acclaimed independent titles such as Dregs, Come Into Me, and Black Stars Above. As a lifelong fan of the medium, I have never experienced anything quite like Black Stars Above which was recently collected. When did writing or the creative arts generally become important to you? Writing and art have pretty well always been a big part of my life. I read voraciously as a kid, both novels and comics. When I was about seven years old, I remember I was reading The Twits by Roald Dahl and I was so infatuated by it that I put it down and went to my parents and told them, “I want to make this. I want to be the guy who writes the story and draws the pictures,” or something of that nature. I thought Dahl was doing the illustrations himself, but they were...

Comic Book Characters that Should Stay Dead

Comic Book Characters that Should Stay Dead

Comic books are full of boring, cliched, and stupid characters fan hate. Fortunately, intelligent comics creators love to kill these lame characters off. Sadly, there are many comics creators who dedicate their careers to reviving every lame dead character. Frighteningly, some of these lame characters; such as Bucky (the Winter Soldier), are making their way into big budget movies. Jason Todd/Robin. Todd back in the 1980s DC comics gave Batman a new Robin Jason Todd. Predictably Bat fans hated the idea. Traditionalists wanted the “real Robin;” Dick Grayson, while many others wanted to scrap the whole idea of Robin. Image by Andrew Martin from Pixabay Therefore, DC took the astonishing move for a comics publisher and asked the fans what they wanted. The fans wanted Todd dead so writer Jim Starlin had the Joker murder Todd. The Death of Robin arc became one of the great Batman stories adding a new depth of realism to the Dark Knight. Disgustingly years later, DC ignored the fans’ wishes and revived Todd as a third rate supervillain called Red Hood. Thus, a classic story became a tiresome cliche. Bucky/the Winter Solider. In the 1940s Golden Age Captain America had a lame sidekick called Bucky....

"News deserts" are getting a boost from local radio

Rapidly developing news around the COVID-19 pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement show how global events deeply impact us at the local level. Every community has been affected by the pandemic. Every city and town has their unique history and reckoning with centuries of systemic racism.   Even though access to real-time local news has been critical to the health and economic wellbeing of American cities and towns, many regions across the country exist in “news deserts,” where local news outlets dedicated to the specific community have shrunk or shut down altogether.  In many of the communities where we own and operate radio stations, Townsquare Media is the only creator and supplier of local news. Traditional news outlets, like television stations and newspapers, either never existed there or have gone out of business.  Local news is too important to the fabric of society to be allowed to wither away like this. That's why I and others at Townsquare partnered with Google to explore how AM/FM radio stations can create sustainable standalone local news sites in underserved regions.  This week, with the support of the Google News Initiative, Townsquare launched a digital news outlet in the Tuscaloosa, Alabama area. The Tuscaloosa Thread will...
