The Game Changers

The Game Changers

I typically recommend books because I love them and I believe reading is one of the most valuable uses of a human’s time. However, I watch things too, and occasionally (though less frequently) I come across something uniquely striking. This time, it was a documentary called The Game Changers, featured on Netflix. The Game Changers delves into the world of athletes and their diets. It broaches the subject from the perspective of an injured UFC fighter (James Wilks) on his quest to quicken his knee recovery. His big discovery is the impact food can have on performance and recovery, for better or for worse. Along the way he meets a multitude of athletes who have shifted their diets from meat and dairy heavy to essentially vegan, almost entirely plant based, with astounding results. Whether to build muscle, enhance endurance, speed recovery, or ease the conscience, the plant-based diet has won serious converts over the last decade, even among the physically elite. Here are a couple of fascinating stats to whet your appetite: Roman gladiators, some of the most physically esteemed people in the history of the world, ate primarily a plant-based diet.75% of food producing land is dedicated to raising animals...

What if Your Diet Consisted of All the Foods You Consider Taboo?

What if Your Diet Consisted of All the Foods You Consider Taboo?

One surprising takeaway Pizza, fried mushrooms, and scones — oh my! Life circumstances are always changing. For me, recent changes involve moving from a place with a fully functioning kitchen to a place without a working oven, and sadly, no dishwasher. Another adjustment — transitioning from having plenty of time to plan and cook meals, to little time to even think about what dinner will involve. And although the shifts in my life have been ultimately positive, they have spiraled into an about-face with my diet. Change is always happening Eight years ago I was able to finally take control of my weight and health after three decades of dieting myself from a skinny kid to clinically obese in my early forties. Most notably, juicing became a big part of my life, as well as cooking simple whole food meals. These changes had a big impact on my health and helped me get to a weight that felt comfortable for me, while being sustainable without feeling restrictive. I loved what I was eating and how it made me feel. With my current situation, green juice has for now fallen by the wayside, as have my beautifully prepared healthy meals. What’s taken...

Mrs Bailey’s Cabbage Chorchori

Her favourite companion to curries, and one of mine also Photo by Monika Grabkowska on Unsplash Among the odder but more harmless habits of the British in India was the tendency to eat Indian food, but in an English conformation: one main dish, usually with meat in it; one carb, usually rice; and one vegetable side-dish. In other words, the classic meat-and-two-veg of the Home Counties, eaten with no real regard to the very different natures of the food, the climate and the country. And as in India, so on Mars, to a great extent. A high proportion of the settlers in the Red Raj came there from India, and brought their customs — and their spices — with them. Mrs Bailey learned from them — and from their daughters, naturally — as she learns from everyone who passes anywhere near her kitchens. Her curry nights may be a little more various than meat-and-two-veg, but that is perhaps still her default; and whether she’s serving an intimate meal for two, just herself and her own special friend, or feeding two hundred ravenous girls and the staff besides, cabbage chorchori is one of her regular fallbacks. There are as many recipes as...

HUMOR

HUMOR

HUMOR And if you are that hater, you might want to pass on this article Photo by Alex Iby on Unsplash I’m betting there’s somebody in your family who hates mushrooms. Every family has a hater. There’s no grey area when it comes to mushroom preference. You either love them, as I and three others in my family do, or you despise them with every fiber of your being. It’s not the same as disliking onions or green peppers, where somebody might say, “I’m not wild about them but I’ll eat them if they’re on the plate. I tolerate them. I can take ’em or leave ‘em” No, you will never hear these words from a bonified mushroom hater. NEVER! And when a hater hates, it’s stated in no uncertain terms. It’s always declared with intense conviction. It’s like a call for all other mushroom haters to stand up and unite. I sorta get it, I guess. Mushrooms aren’t the most attractive looking thing you’ll find growing in nature, or the produce aisle at the grocery store. I agree, there’s often a slimy quality when they’re cooked. And they have that “earthy” smell. There’s a similar quality with beets. You’re either...

The Pasta You’ve NEVER tasted and One You’ll Never Stop Making

If I didn’t already have you at that title, then the pasta recipe I’m about to share will surely do the trick. I am a bit of a foodie, I mean really? Who isn’t at this moment of our lives? We all have nothing but an abundance of time to do all the things we only used to dream of. Eating, sleeping, binge watching Netflix, and mindlessly eating again. One of my favourite things to eat and cook is pasta. Because it’s delicious, easy, simple, and loaded with carbs, a woman’s frenemy. Pasta is a very versatile dish and you can pair it and make it however you’d like. This pasta recipe was created by my mother-in-law who decided one day to introduce Italian pasta to Indian curry, and voila a masterpiece was created. I am a lover of both Indian and Italian food so this was the best of both worlds, and I wasn’t complaining then and am definitely not complaining now. And neither will you once you try it. 1 to 2 cups Orzo pasta1 Boneless Chicken Breast (cut in cubes)1/2 an onion (diced)1 tomato (blended to puree)4 cloves of garlic1 thumb of ginger (approx)1 tsp salt1 tsp turmeric1/2...
