Collaboration tools are destroying productivity

Collaboration tools are destroying productivity

Tools like Slack, Microsoft Teams, Hipchat. These applications are horrible because their default mode of operation is to ping and disrupt. Even worse they are instilling a culture in workplaces where immediate responses are expected.Don’t believe me? What do you spend most of your day doing? Responding to notifications? How quickly do you respond? Do you let them sit? Can you let them sit?Remember email? You know what was great about email? It was asynchronous. You sent an email, and you generally didn’t expect an immediate response. Of course there were the few crazies that did, but generally if you got a reply within a business day it was all good. After a few days, you might send a follow up. If not, you might reword your email and try again, because you’re still stuck and by now you’ve tried a few things to solve your problem and they haven’t worked. But aren’t these collaboration tools driving better communication? Nope. At least with email, you had to craft a comprehensible message to get a response. Put some thought into your questions and gasp perhaps even do a bit research. Now, all you have to do is find Steve on the list and...

Following Through Your Personal Commitments

Following Through Your Personal Commitments

Photo by JESHOOTS.COM on UnsplashHow committed are you to yourself? When you work for a company, it’s not so hard. There’s always someone who holds you accountable whether it is a manager or an owner. If you don’t follow through and get your work done, there’s someone who holds you accountable. But what about when that person is yourself? This year so far I’ve struggled. Take today for example.I had today off. I had plans. I hadn’t gotten much sleep over the last few days so I was exhausted. Then, my husband walks through the door, unexpectedly having the day off.Great.I love my husband, but none of my plans included him, and I knew exactly what was going to happen… and it did. My plans flew out the window. I was a little irritated, but on the good side, I knew I would also get to spend the day with him which was a bonus. After we ran errands, all I wanted to do was go crawl into bed, watch a movie and take a nap. But… I am my boss. There are things that I needed to get done, and no one there to make me.If I want to hit all my goals this...

I don’t want to go back to my dead end job — No Excuses

I don’t want to go back to my dead end job — No Excuses

No excuses this time.Photo by Nate Johnston on UnsplashI used to be so happy when I got my first job at a local movie theater near my house.I was 16 and I remember turning in an application for this job three times in a row (I assume they weren’t hiring anyone at the time). One of the managers called me in for an interview and as soon as it was over, she told me to get ready for paperwork. After weeks of praying…I finally got my first job!Unfortunately, the job got more and more toxic every year.Don’t worry I didn’t come on here to complain to you about my dead end job. There’s already enough of that. This is the time that I tell you what I’ve been doing to fix the problem.I think creative outlets are therapy. They help us cultivate our thoughts and express them in a way that is fluid. We are able to feel however we want to feel and translate what it looks like on a blank canvas like writing a paper or spray painting a mural. My personal creative outlet is writing. I can say how I feel freely and share it however I want.A couple weeks ago I started...

One Simple Trick to Always be Motivated

One Simple Trick to Always be Motivated

Photo by Sebastian Voortman at Pexels.comOver seven years ago, I was diagnosed with clinical depression. The worst symptom of depression is a lack of motivation. It creates this never-ending cycle that only makes your depression worse. Most of us with depression know exactly what we need to do, but how do we do that when we have absolutely no motivation to do so?Well, I figured it out, and I promise you that if you adopt this simple hack into your daily life, you’ll always be motivated. I know this because I still struggle with depression, but I get more done in a week than some people get done in a month. I don’t say this to toot my own horn; I say this to hopefully inspire you.In order to stay motivated, you need to realize the source of the problem: all you do is think about yourself.Sorry to break it to you, but that’s the truth. This is part of the human condition, so don’t feel singled out by this harsh reality. By nature, we are selfish, self-centered creatures. This is why we can’t find the motivation to even get ourselves out of bed. We’re constantly thinking about our wants and our...

9 Most Common Lies Programmers Tell And Why

9 Most Common Lies Programmers Tell And Why

Photo by Annie Spratt on UnsplashA programmer, some may call them a coder, a developer, or a wizard, is a person who creates computer software for living. They are the future most important living beings on earth. The more the world relies on computers to define how the world works, the more powerful programmers become. Expecto Patronum!Sounds too much? œThe opinions expressed here represent my own and don’t necessarily represent the majority. Why so serious? ¡As a tech lead, I have had the pleasure of meeting all-types of programmers in my career. To summarize in a sentence, programmers are notorious liars. Programmers lie like it’s their job and nobody’s business. Is lying necessary? Believe me, sometimes it does. Things can easily get ugly and complicated at work, when:You have top management to answer toYou have a large team to manageYou have multiple projects to handleYou have clients that don’t know what they wantYou have a stupid timeline, etc. With all these frustrations, I can’t say lying is correct or wrong, because sometimes we need these lies to cover our ass.Below are some of the common phrases I have shortlisted based on what I’ve heard quite often. I’m sure that you may relate some...

Our RuMonsi LifeSchool 2019: Making compromises

Our RuMonsi LifeSchool 2019: Making compromises

Every parent would know. Seeing their children’s progress is awe-inspiring. It is my pride and joy to share to everybody how much my kids have grown. So here you go. Read it or not. Haha. This is how our schooling went for year 2019.This article exists for documentation purposes and because I don’t want to be keeping some hardcopy of this somewhere where it will gather some molds, dust mites, and silverfish. Or the possibility that it might get lost or destroyed is nerve-wracking. Better to have something stored in the cloud. I am the type of person who gets overwhelmed with so many stuff. So anyway. Let me describe first how we do schooling in our family. Our School Year starts on January and ends on DecemberWe believe education or homeschooling starting from the very first day the child has been born. Or maybe even in the womb. With that aside and considering having an “official school year”, some families (and even schools) officially start their schooling in August. While others start in the very start of the year. Others, just start whenever.Starting the year on January was our best bet because record-keeping is easier. It is easier to sort photos by...

Yesterday, I Deleted 71 Blog Posts

Yesterday, I Deleted 71 Blog Posts

Here’s why and how to pick what to keep, rewrite, and updatePhoto by Steve Johnson on UnsplashIn 2015, I started a personal training business and took it online a year later. In mid-2018, I closed up shop and stopped exercise and nutrition coaching. Despite taking my business in a different direction over a year ago, I left my health and fitness blog posts published on my site.Yesterday, I deleted all 71 of them. While tapping the delete button made me feel excited about committing to my writing 100%, I couldn’t help but feel my anxiety rising as if I was standing on an ants nest. What if it wasn’t the right choice? What if I was making a monumental mistake? All of these reasons have been swirling around my head for months.Lack of directionWhen I closed my fitness business, I built a new website at tarafitness.com.au. Initially, I designed it as a lifestyle blog, so health and fitness posts had a place.I didn’t want to waste themIt took a lot of time, effort, and research to write 71 blog posts for my fitness business. So when I closed the business, I didn’t want to waste all of that work. Having chosen to...

Why Do We Procrastinate?

Why Do We Procrastinate?

I told myself I’d begin writing at 9 a.m. and crank out a few pages of a report due tomorrow before lunch. It’s 1:55 p.m. and I am just now sitting down to write. Sound familiar?Procrastination is fairly common among people. According to Joseph Ferrari, a professor of psychology and a leading expert on the subject, roughly 20% of the world’s population are chronic procrastinators while this number skyrockets up to 70% for undergraduates. (Source: https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1111/j.1467-9280.1997.tb00460.x)People have struggled with procrastination since early times as seen in the classic Greek poem wrote by Hesoid:Works and DaysDo not postpone for tomorrowor the day after tomorrow;barns are not filled by those who postponeand waste time in aimlessness.Work prospers with care;He who postpones wrestles with ruin. It’s important to not only see procrastination as the postponement of important tasks. Someone who wastes time in aimlessness by busying him or herself with tasks that are not urgent are equally guilty of procrastinating. Which brings us to our next point:Procrastination is the action of delaying or postponing something. For example, you need to buy food but put off going to the store until tomorrow. Or you find yourself scrolling social media, filing paperwork or rearranging your folders on...
