06.2019:  ‘MAKER COMICS: FIX A CAR!’  By Chris Schweizer

A quick perusal of my trusty Farmer’s Almanac (not “Poor Richards” however — I find it very hard to put my faith in manuals written by people who aren’t fabulously wealthy, stars of poorly contrived reality television series, members of my Wednesday Night Bowling League and/or masters of selfie-promotion. “Poor” Richard’s? Seriously? You’d have thunk he’d have put at least a little effort into it and come up with something like Rich Pour-hard’s Almanac. I mean, really …) by which I mean the manual I penned myself — “Jirk Dentley’s Fabulous Compendium of Esoteric Facts, Priceless Life Lessons, Hobo Code-Breaking Keys, Dance Tips and All-Around Farmers’ Almanackery” — you no doubt have a copy or seven of your own, as I know I do …

A page from the interior pages of this month’s Kids Graphic Novel of the Month Club selection, “Maker Comics: Fix a Car!”

Anywhose, a quick perusal of said valuable tome reminded me of a few saliant facts:

FACT TWO: GO-CART AND/OR SUMMER CRUISING SEASON IS, LIKEWISE, FAST APPROACHING AS WELL.

Get Ready For… Comics Vs. Games 2

Last year, the prestigious Toronto Comics Arts Festival asked us to take part in a first of its kind celebration of both comics and video games. And the end result was so spectacular that we’re gearing up for round two!

Comics Vs. Games 2 is an official TCAF 2013 event that will take place both onsite and off, in the same way that Comics Vs. Games 1 was for TCAF 2012. Except it’ll be even bigger and bolder, in both size and scope. There will be three primary components this time:

- The Comics Vs. Games Showcase are games hand picked by Miguel Sternberg, grand architect of Comics Vs. Games, and all sharing formal or aesthetic influences with the comics medium. Each will be playable at the Toronto Reference Library.

- The Comics Vs. Games Gallery: Presented by Attract Mode will again feature a selection of artwork from noted and celebrated cartoonists and illustrators, who have all been asked to explore the the world of video games in a medium that they know best.

Those involved are a mix of returning favorites from last year and some fresh blood that myself and Adam are thrilled to be working with; who’s who will be revealed soon. The Gallery will also be at Comics Vs. Games’ new home, Bento Miso, along with…

Gate Movements Are Stupid: A History Of #comicsgate. Part Three

Chuck Dixon.

(continued from Part Two: https://medium.com/@willenglish/gate-movements-are-stupid-a-history-of-comicsgate-part-two-f09f7f28b0bb?postPublishedType=repub)

Now let’s talk about Chuck Dixon. Dixon, at first glance, seems to provide solid proof of Ethan’s claim. According to an article published in the April 2017 issue of The Federalist, Dixon claims that he was blacklisted from Marvel based solely on his conservative politics [ 9]. I should point out, however, that The Federalist is not an objective source. It’s a cartoonishly pro-conservative magazine and is about as subtle about it as a cannon blast to the face, and this is true here. The article in question paints Marvel as this towering anti-Christian bastion of pure evil that makes Republican staffers suffer the torture of Sisyphus for daring to support Donald Trump [ 9]. And yet the piece is curiously silent on the details as to why Mr. Dixon was blacklisted, claiming that their inquiries to Marvel went unanswered.

Chuck Dixon.

Thankfully, Chuck has talked about this at length elsewhere, so it wasn’t hard to find more reliable sources. For example, in one interview conducted in February of 2018 by Hollywoodintoto.com, Dixon explained that he’s “burnt every bridge by now so the repercussions amount only to sad, breathless rants on Facebook or impotent attempts to boycott me.” [ 57] He also echoes Ethan’s claims that the election of Donald Trump was the final impetus for his blacklisting. “If I had managed to hold on at DC and Marvel until now,” he says. “That would have ended with Trump’s victory.” [ 57]

So, does Dixon prove that Ethan is correct? Well not so fast there, young stallion. Look, I do respect Chuck Dixon as a writer, but the more I read about it, the more the simplistic “I was blacklisted for my beliefs” angle began to fall apart.

This picture is from Chuck Dixon’s crowdfunded comic ‘Ravage: Kill All Men.’ …*Facepalm* really, dude? Really?

I found out that Dixon at one point had claimed to have been blacklisted from Marvel for the past fifteen years [ 57], which was shocking to hear until I learned that Dixon had a history of getting into fights with editors at both Marvel and DC [ 65] [ 66]. With former Marvel Senior Editor, Axel Alonso, being a particular sore thorn in Dixon’s backside. Chuck would have you believe that these arguments were never his fault and always political. But you have to take that with a grain of salt. I’m not saying that none of these arguments were brought on by politics. I’m sure a lot of them were, but there are two things we need to consider here.

Gate Movements Are Stupid: A History Of #comicsgate. Part Two.

Well, I could have told you that.

No One Cares That You’re a Republican.

(continued from Part One: https://medium.com/@willenglish/gate-movements-are-stupid-a-history-of-comicsgate-part-one-b30996506c4a )

In the interview, Ethan states that Comicsgates was a haven for creators who could create what they wanted and be free from “Social Justice Warrior Harassment.” [ 8] Ok, Ethan, now would you mind clarifying what that means exactly? What did they do that was so oppressive? Was there anything you or any of these creators might have said or done that got them blacklisted? What exactly happened here? So far as I could discover, Ethan never adequately answers these questions anywhere. So I first had to do a little digging into what could get a comic creator blacklisted. According to an article I found on Bleeding Cool News, almost all of writers and artist hired by the Big Two (DC and Marvel Comics) are all freelancers, and that a creator getting blacklisted is only one step below getting fired. But it’s not necessarily permanent, and it can happen for any number of reasons. Getting into a fight with an editor for example, or making your employer look bad in public, or continually being late, or other things of that nature. The article also states that most blacklisted creators could be un-blacklisted if they just apologize for whatever they did [ 24].

I would love to see Ethan Van Sciver try the whole “I and Comicsgate are the best thing evar” routine with Alan Moore. Also, this quote isn’t wrong.

Now, I admit I don’t know how accurate this is, but it makes a lot of sense to me, because in my opinion, losing your job for being an unprofessional jerk, is far more plausible than whether or not you voted for Donald Trump in 2016.

What’s more, a separate article on Bleeding Cool from March 14, 2019, indicates that this alleged prosecution of conservatives is pure fantasy. According to this article, current Marvel Chairman, Ike Perlmutter, is a “Major Trump Supporter” [ 130]. It also states that significant industry figures a such as Steve Geppi (founder of Diamond Comic Distributors, Inc.) and Mike Richardson (The founder of Dark Horse Comics) are both Republicans and were “very vocal against voting Democrat at the last election” [ 130]. This article also reinforces the notion that the biggest reason for a creator being blacklisted or fired from the Big Two is unprofessional behavior and not politics. “[…] there does seem to be is a number of creators not getting work at the Big Two,” the article explains. “because they have posted online in a fashion that has spurred too much controversy for the publisher […] Moreover, they have often been openly critical of a publisher that they are working for. And others have been similarly pushed into the long grass for attacking or verbally abusing other creators or editors at a publisher, publicly or privately.” [ 130]

Now, in the interest of fairness, I did try and find specific incidents of conservative creators being harassed and blacklisted as Ethan describes. Fortunately for me, he did name some names. Besides himself, he also named artist Mitch and Elizabeth Breitweiser, writer Chuck Dixon, and artist Mike S. Miller. Now, here’s the hard part about trying to find information about this. Comic book companies don’t like talking about blacklisting creators, especially when it involves popular creators. The reason is obvious: it’s bad PR, and while a creator doesn’t have a reason to lie about something like this, it still makes the story very one-sided and hard to verify objectively. Sadly, that’s the case here. Aside from Ethan, Chuck Dixon was the one I could find the most information about, and as such, we’ll save him for the next part.

Gate Movements Are Stupid: A History Of #comicsgate. Part One.

Introduction.

Dear lord, what am I getting myself into? Why do I feel the need to talk about Comicsgate? Forgive my lack of enthusiasm, dear readers, but this is one area of geek culture that I genuinely wish did not exist, mostly for two reasons. The first is that trying to be objective about this is incredibly difficult. The second is that the more research I do into this subject, the more disgusted I become, and the more I realize that Comicsgate is, by and large, not motivated by a desire to make the comic book industry better. No, it’s purely driven by two things, nostalgia, and politics. Nostalgia because the movement’s goals seem to center around a desire to return to a simpler, happier time that probably never existed, and politics because professional comic book creators who are conservative feel like comic books are becoming too liberal in their content, and that because of that, they’re being censored, marginalized, or ousted from the industry. Now, In fairness, there is some truth to this. It’s hard to deny that some comics in recent years, particularly from Marvel, have been playing with liberal ideas and themes. However, with that said, I’m not at all convinced that it’s as much of a problem as they have made it out to be, and Comicsgate’s desire to go back to what they describe as ‘apolitical entertainment’ is so rose-colored that it makes me physically ill. Besides, when you look at the movement as a whole. Well, let’s say that their actions don’t match their argument. In this essay, I’m going to go over what Comicsgate is, talk about its history and some of the major players involved, and also describe in detail how the movement destroyed itself.

Oh, one more thing: there aren’t going to be any shocking revelations here. This essay is meant for people who don’t know what Comicsgate is but wish to learn about it. So, unless stated otherwise, everything I say is based on information that is publically available from numerous online sources (with my own opinion sprinkled in here and there). For the sake of transparency, I will provide a list of all my sources at the very end. Also, this essay is rather long, so I had to divide it into separate parts. As such, a link to the next section will be provided at the end of each part. With that out of the way, let’s get started.

Comicsgate Is…

Ethan Van Sciver

To begin with, what is the Comicsgate movement in its own words? To answer that, let’s look at the words of one of the movement’s de facto leader, artist Ethan Van Sciver, best known for his creator-owned comic Cyberfrogs as well as his work for DC Comics. In an interview conducted on September 18, 2018, with the website gamingculture.com, Ethan explained that Comicsgate was “[…] a consumer-led revolt against what is clearly a left-wing dominance in the comic book industry. It’s an opportunity for displaced comic book fans, fans who have often quit the hobby, to take control and make or support the comics they’d rather read. It’s an opportunity for creators who cannot find work in mainstream comics for political reasons, or any reason, to create again, free from the oppressive social justice warrior harassment and blacklisting that made work difficult or impossible for them.” [ 8]

When asked by the interviewer about a possible middle ground in the debate. Ethan replied, “We are the middle ground. Even though many of us share moderate to right views, we’re committed to the business of creating neutrality in our stories and art. This isn’t a counter to the radical left. It’s merely a rational alternative.” [ 8]

This is what the leader of the movement says it is. Sounds a little grandiose, doesn’t it? I’ll be honest, Ethan’s explanation leaves a bit to be desired, as he doesn’t properly define what the movement is actually against. Thankfully, an article from the Website Bounding into Comics put together a list of that very thing which is as follows:

A Brief History of Snow White: A Very Unscholarly Treatise

What the Brothers Grimm began with Snow White in 1812 has become a well-loved and perennial favorite all around the world. Now we offer our version with Lumi White, but where did this story come from, and how did it begin? Let’s find out.

The Grim Tales of the Brothers Grimm

In 1810, Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm worked under the folklorist Clemens Brentano to compile a collection of Germanic folk tales. Brentano promptly then forgot about it. Not to be deterred, the Grimm brothers set out to publish the tales on their own. The first version of Snow White appeared, along with other classic tales in Kinder- und Hausmärchen (Children’s and Household Tales) in 1812. It was an instant hit. This was due mainly to the artistic hand of Wilhelm, who breathed life into the tales and added literary touches. It’s believed that Snow White, like many of the collected tales, originated during the medieval period.

The brothers were not purists and changed the stories often from edition to edition. The Snow White in the 1812 edition is different from the final 1857 one. For example, the Queen in the 1812 edition has Snow White’s actual mother held captive, not step-mother. The Queen also tells the huntsman to stab Snow White over and over again and to bring her organs over so that she may eat them. Lovely. And in the final 1857 version, the Queen is punished by being made to dance with red hot iron shoes on until she dies. Not to mention, there is no kiss, Snow White awakens when her glass coffin is dropped (or in the 1812 version, a servant slaps her), dislodging the bit of poison apple from her throat.

While the Grimms’ give us the earliest written version of the Snow White story, similar themes and elements show up in other stories from around the world. For example, the Malay tale, Bidasari, tells the story from 1750 CE of a witch queen who asks her magic mirror who is the prettiest lady in the kingdom.

Hi-ho, Hi-ho, Disney Takes on Snow

It’s no surprise that Snow White became solidified in the public consciousness with the 1937 release of Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. While the House the Mouse Built may have started with Mickey, it was Snow White that rocketed Disney to the heights of success it enjoys today. The first full-length feature animated film could have easily destroyed the company if it had been a financial flop. But it wasn’t, and it added to the Snow White folklore, giving us names for the dwarfs, Snow’s affinity with animals, and love’s first kiss.

Cloud Covered: What was new with Google Cloud in May

As May flowers bloomed, we watched our garden of blog posts grow. New features in Android phones and Gmail cropped up, and we’ve got some updates for cloud developers. Plus, check out photos and details about our new machine learning supercomputers. Here’s what was new.

Android phones help add security.
Android phones (versions 7.0+, Nougat) now come with a built-in security key. This is the FIDO type of security key, an industry standard that can be used for two-factor authentication—an extra verification step on top of a password that makes your sign-ins resistant to phishing scams.

Calendar now comes in dark mode.
When you’re looking at your Google Calendar, or at Keep, our task management tool, you can now see it in dark mode. This is nice in low light, for those of you checking the next day’s schedule in the dark, since it reduces screen brightness. Whether it’s enabled by default will depend on your version of Android and your settings. Plus, we announced the launch of Gmail confidential mode last month, so you’ll soon be able to send messages with built-in information rights management controls. This means you can create expiration dates and revoke sent messages, plus these messages can’t be forwarded, copied, printed or downloaded.

Learn lots more about these and other topics in the brand-new G Suite Learning Center.

Supercomputers for machine learning arrived.
Machine learning (ML) can help with tasks ranging from image recognition to disease research and medical diagnoses. Machine learning requires data scientists to build a model and train it with examples so that the computer can eventually learn a pattern. This requires a lot of computing power. Super powerful and expensive data centers full of servers were not enough to handle the growth of AI workloads and computational horsepower, so we created TPUs, our own hardware chips, just for the purpose of speeding up machine learning. Now, those TPUs are publicly available in pods, which are essentially stacks of these TPUs linked together to form an AI supercomputer. Data scientists and researchers can use them to do machine learning tasks much faster, in minutes or hours compared to days or weeks previously. Make sure to take a look at the photos in the post—when it comes to massive modern supercomputers, a picture is worth a thousand words.

Tying it together?

How does a book about design and a classic graphic novel impact a project built in a virtual world designed for orienting new students?

Good question.

I may be jaded by my years in the industry (both casual gaming and ed-tech), but the primary impact of the two books in questions was more metacognitive in nature, whereas the in-world project was driven from and by my long-standing work habits and development methodology.

Much of the 100 Things content is what I’ve seen or used over the years. Some design principles, admittedly I used without knowing why. In other words, I’ve always copied or emulated design that I find intuitive, interesting, engaging or empowering. 100 Things explained the science behind the notion.

When it comes to designing the in-world experience, I use the approach that I’ve always used for ed-tech projects. I had neither the time or resources to really think outside the box. Maybe someday I can revisit the project concept as part of a funded venture.

With 4-H, helping more students learn computer science

As our CEO Sundar Pichai announced today in my home state of Oklahoma, we’re making our largest ever computer science education grant from Google.org to support 4-H, the largest youth development organization in the country. This $6 million grant—made as part of Grow with Google's efforts to ensure that everyone has access to future opportunities—will help provide more than 1 million youth across the country with computer science skills, plus computer science training for their educators.

Investing in Oklahoma and across the U.S.

Editor’s Note: This week we’re making some big moves around the $13 billion U.S. investment we announced in February. On Monday, our CFO Ruth Porat was in Michigan to announce an additional investment in our offices in Ann Arbor and Detroit. And tomorrow, we’re breaking ground on a new data center in Midlothian, TX, and expanding our office in Austin.

Today, Google CEO Sundar Pichai was in Oklahoma to announce a $600 million investment to expand our data center in Mayes County, as well as our biggest computer science education grant in Google.org’s history. Read his edited remarks below.

I enjoy visiting the places our data centers call home. I especially love to see the local touches. In the case of Pryor, it’s the mechanical bull in the lobby, which I’m told is a lot of fun. It requires good positioning, strong balance, and sometimes digging in your heels. So, not much different from my day job.

But the real reason I look forward to these visits is the community. It’s a privilege to meet the people who are making Pryor a great place to live and work.

At Google, we are technology optimists. Not because we believe in technology, but because we believe in people.
