Contracts For Creatives — The Series

Number 69 — I can prove you did ’cause I got me a picture…

There are many ways to get paid for your creative concepts…

…(your “intellectual property”). Some of you may be contributing to a fixed installation, a mural, a score or performance, a software program, a single painting, education… the possibilities are many.

But often your art or design is the basis for, or a contribution to, some sort of…thing

…that gets reproduced in quantity. Those “widgets” we’ll call them are then sold, and those sales drive the calculation of your royalties. Again, the possibilities are many. Prints, books, greeting cards, figurines, rugs, fabrics, clothing, home goods, tools and instruments, stickers, it’s truly endless.

It’s important to acquire and hold samples of the products that feature your IP.

Not only does it feel good to have a shelf full of accomplishments, but if there is ever a copyright dispute, a sample marked with your copyright information can be invaluable.

The flip side is also true:
