Comics pave the way on Instagram

Comics on Instagram serve as a stress relief for the people on this platform

Comics have always been around in history. Many of us grew up reading comics, watching cartoons based on it and some of us even loved to see the comic strips that came in the supplementary newspaper. Comic books not only meant the superhero ones that we get in the books and magazine shop. They also taught us a lot about life and gave us life lessons to absorb in a simple manner.

Instagram is the “In thing” now and everyone is showcasing their talents there. The comic scene is slowly growing in the portal and is reaching millions of people who have a taste for comics. What makes them all unique is that each and every comic page is different. Some talk a great deal about life through simple illustrations, some about jokes that make a lot of sense about the current situations of the world. These comics surely make rounds and make us smile or make us think through the mind boggling illustrations. Here are some of the different comic pages in Instagram that have really come a long way to please us with their characters and illustrations

Cyanide and Happiness

If you are up for some real jokes that are quite adult related then you should totally head over to their page to witness some action. They are fun to read and sometimes even take a dig at the society that we are living in.

Panel Reflection, C2E2 2019, Part 3 — Costumes and Colorists

The Chicago Comics and Entertainment Expo, or C2E2, took place this year from March 22 to March 24. I attended as a professional and have decided to share my personal take on some of the panels I attended. This is the third and last of my Panel Reflections.

I’m a big fan of learning how art is created. I used to buy DVDs for the commentary tracks, when that was still a thing, and I love behind-the-scenes documentaries. In my first Panel Reflection, I wrote of how one of the three pieces of advice given at almost every panel about breaking into comics is to practice. I apply that to learning as much as one can about the medium I love.

To that end, two of my favorite panels were about costume design and colorists, both moderated by Eisner-award-winning critic Oliver Sava with humor and focus. “Comic Book Costume Design and Creation” was held on Friday, March 22 from 5:30 to 6:30 pm in Room S405B in McCormick Place. The costume designers on hand were Babs Tarr (Batgirl, Motor Crush), Erica Henderson (The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl), Annie Wu (Black Canary, Hawkeye), Russell Dauterman (Thor), and Kenneth Rocafort (Superman, Red Hood and the Outlaws).

Mr. Sava opened the discussion: “When designing characters, what are your top priorities?” Ms. Henderson wants to “make everyone distinct” and “recognizable from a distance.” “Style comes down to personality a lot of the time,” she concluded. Ms. Tarr mentioned the importance of determining factors such as financial background and age. Mr. Dauterman expressed the need for something practical, which Ms. Wu echoed while elaborating on other aspects of a character to take into consideration.

Is this character street-level? Superpowered? If a character can fly, it doesn’t matter if they’re wearing heels. What’s the best way to emphasize action? Capes? Ms. Wu also went beyond the practical applications of the costume itself to the practical consideration of having to draw “page upon page” of whatever costume the artist designs. Mr. Rocafort talked about whether he’d be designing a new character for a new series and the importance of communicating with the writer and editor. “Trendy is easy,” he said, “but follow style and don’t be too lazy.”

Growing up as a son of a Comic Book Artist

By Ian Hanson

I appreciate growing up in the home of a comic book artist and that of a librarian, because my home was always filled to the brim with books, creativity and always sparking the imagination of my siblings and I. My father, Travis Hanson, has been creating all of his life, and has been doing so professionally for over 20 years. He got his inspiration to publish and go public, I like to say, was when and because I was born on the first day of San Diego Comic Con. My father was present for my birth and then he went to Comic Con and there he met creators William Stout and James A. Owen, both of whom set him on this path. They gave him a great message, one of which he repeats today to everyone that has ever wanted to enter the industry, or basically do anything significant in your life.

What happened was James said, “How bad do you want it?” and before you could get an answer to him, he would say “You cannot tell me, you must show me.”

That was the start for my father. From there he met many other people throughout this business, even now people are coming in and out of his life and he takes all the advice he can get from his pros and mentors.

I have always felt this great connection to the comic and entertainment industry and this is in part because of my upbringing and also the presence of beautiful artwork and amazing stories from my dad. When I was younger, my dad would go and set up his booth at various comic conventions through the year with the help of my uncles. When he would come home after these shows my siblings and I would gather around to hear the wondrous tales of famous people he would meet, costumes he would see, and most of all the spoils he brought back of books, graphic novels, beautiful prints and other great things. It was almost like we had Christmas morning once a month.

Making of the ‘first’ Somali English comic book

How a young Somali artist who left home as a child used comics as a medium to re-narrate Somali stories.

“Children and young people more generally love imaginary super heroes, and I appreciated that these super heroes come to life through them, but I asked myself once, what would a young Somali person need to see, know and learn through a Somali super hero”, says Mohamed Ahmed Sheikh.

A Minnesota based Somali poet, actor and writer, Sheikh is commonly known as Ahmed. He’s now completed what he calls the first Somali comic book written under the pen name M. Hajji Ahmed.

“Growing up I didn’t see many stories that could speak to my experience, and the experiences of other Somalis, so my ambition to enter acting, write poetry and create art in general comes from that,” 25-year-old Ahmed tells me.

“I want to use this medium as a tool not only to entertain young Somali people, but also teach them about our culture, our history and religion and from our perspective which is something that isn’t widely available” he continues.

Ahmed recently presented his ideas to local Somali business owners and educators at a private book talk in Minneapolis, Minnesota. (Courtesy of Mohamed Ahmed Sheikh)

Ahmed was born in the southern city of Kismayo in the 90s in the midst a violent civil war that ravaged Somalia after Siad Barre’s military dictatorship collapsed in 1991. The country descended into civil war, an experience which had a big impact on him.

The Scorpion Slayer

I was puttering around, as I do on weekend mornings when I don’t have plans. Suddenly my daughter started screaming, “MOM! MOM! MOM!” in a manner which indicated that perhaps the world was coming to an end in an especially creative way. Or, since she’s a teenager, in a manner which indicated some celebrity broke up with some other celebrity. I ran to her side.

The scream was legit. She was in the bathroom holding a toothbrush, using it to point at the sink. In the sink was the sort of creature upon which the Japanese used in the 1950s to model its movie monsters.

It waved its claws and its tail stinger at me. Despite our size difference, it was not afraid of me. I was afraid of it but determined not to let my daughter know. My fear seemed ridiculous and irrational, and I pride myself on making sense.

I had no weapons at my disposal. I was wearing green pajamas with pink flamingos on them. I had no pockets to search, no shoes to take off and use as bludgeons. I opened the cabinet beneath the sink and found nothing particularly useful there either. I picked up a spray bottle of Formula 409. The bottle didn’t seem sturdy enough to damage the scaly exterior of the scorpion, so I spritzed him. He stopped, shrugged off the cleaner, and tried again to climb the side of the sink. I spritzed again. And again. He was not pleased, mostly because it made the sides of the sink slippery, but he didn’t seem to be in any kind of mortal distress. I guess it is the 410th Formula that is the lethal one.

“What if he crawled in my bed?” My daughter asked.

Back on the High Line Again

The High Line is an elevated train trestle in New York City that was turned into a park. It threads between buildings so closely, it feels like you’re getting an ant-farm view of every type of city architecture. My favorites are the weird things I can’t identify.

Clouded

“That’d make a good photo,” remarked Lucy.

“Only for some motivational social media crap,” snorted Meria.

“I like clouds,” pondered Lucy. “I wrote a play about five clouds. On the opening night, the director added a sixth cloud.”

Meria shook her head and pressed on.

“The stage was overcast,” grinned Lucy.

I’m taking a break from my normal inspirational or business focused blog.

I’m taking a break from my normal inspirational or business focused blog. And, I’m doing a movie review. I’m a huge nerd, and I have an affection for comics and everything “super hero”. My wife and I recently saw the latest Fox film from the X-Men universe; Dark Phoenix. Before I dive into my overall feelings for the film, let me give you a brief intro into this film’ history so that you can understand the film a little bit better.

Origins

The film focuses on the character Jean Grey. She becomes consumed with an extra terrestrial entity known as the Dark Phoenix. And as a result, she turns into a fierce, uncontrollable force to reckoned with. This concept alone, would be enough to build a compelling script and an interesting movie for fans to enjoy. The X-Men debuted back in the 1960’s. They were a band of mutants, ostracized because they were “different”. In fact, the creator of X-Men; Stan Lee used Martin Luther King Jr., and Malcolm X as focal points for two of the main characters in the comics.

In 1976, Marvel introduced the Phoenix character into the already popular X-Men comics franchise. It went over very well. It was one of the most popular comic runs for the X-Men franchise. In 2006, Fox tried to introduce the Phoenix storyline to audiences. It was not received well. The same can be said with this current iteration of the character.
