As you might expect, a lot of these incidents that involve actual Comic Book professionals harassing Comicsgate supporters happens on social media and appear to be about unprofessional behavior or, as I said in part one, hostility to fans. Probably the most infamous (or hilarious, depending on how you look at it) of these was when for no adequately explained reason, creator Robbi Rodriguez thought it would be a good idea to tweet a picture of someone’s naked anus to Ethan Van Scriver. The tweet, according to Bounding Into Comics, has since been deleted [ 98]. This incident alone shows that yes, anti-Comicsgate harassment does happen, but there’s a wrinkle that I feel I’d be remiss in not pointing out. Some of the reported incidents here are not entirely honest.
Just as an example, let’s take a look at Tweet from Magdalene Visaggio that Comicsgaters often cited as prime examples professionals being hostile to fans. In this tweet, she proclaims her desires to beat cis people with a bat. Sounds crazy, right? Well, it does if you only look at the screen captures provided one article on The Medium (see below)[ 39].
However, If you examine it more closely, you’ll notice that Ms. Visaggio appears to be angrily reacting to something, and once you realize that, the answer becomes clear. The Tweet is actually part of a much longer thread, and that’s been taken out of context, and as a result, Ms. Visaggio appears to be acting batshit insane for no reason. The original thread has long been deleted, but I was able to find a more complete screen capture that gives a bit more context (see below).
As you can see, Ms. Visaggio references fighting something and also references the 1969 New York Stonewall riots, which for those of you who know your civil rights history, will tell you that what she’s angry about has something to do with the LGBTQ community.
The man I spoke with, a Discord user calling himself ‘Gwaltzilla’*, had been reading comics since he was a child and they helped him get into reading things outside of comics. He later joined the US Navy and earned a degree in science. While I didn’t agree with everything he said, he did give me a better perspective on Comicsgate beyond what the media has reported.
*Sidenote: Just so we’re clear, I do have Gwaltzilla’s permission to name him. And he said that he would be ok with talking with people (regardless of your position on Comicsgate or on politics) on Discord if they so choose. I only ask that, if you do reach out to him, please be nice to the guy. He really did help out a lot. Thank you.
One of the things I asked him about was the movement’s command structure (for lack of a better term). He told me that there isn’t one. According to him, Comicsgate isn’t one giant organization as the media often portrays it. It’s more akin to independent city-states that are, as he put it, “infinite” in number. What unites them is the desire for better quality comics (however they may define such).
However, each of these factions has their own ideas of how to achieve this goal and mostly work independently of each other. In short, although Richard Meyer and Ethan are credited as the “leaders” of Comicsgate, they in actuality don’t “lead” anybody, save for their own followers.
After Comicsgate started, the nastiness continued. As with Meyer, Ethan and his following went after creators and critics they didn’t like. Ethan goes about this not only through Twitter but also through his YouTube channel. His channel mostly consists of vlogs and live streams in where he hosts discussions on pop culture, comic books, and Comicsgate related topics. He also conducts interviews with a variety of guests such as Richard Meyer (whom Ethan has featured many times and just as many times defended him), Chuck Dixon, Vox Day, and Mark S. Miller among others. He uses these vlogs and live streams to lash out against his critics and perceived enemies, like back in September of 2018 when he uploaded a now-deleted ninety-minute video of himself verbally massacring creator and Comicsgate critic, Gail Simone, for no reason other than he really doesn’t like her [ 105] [ 106].
That was not the only time Ethan’s YouTube channel was the catalyst for one of Comicsgate’s harassment controversies. One such controversy began in January of 2018 when artist and Comicsgate supporter Jon Malin sent out a Tweet where he compared Marvel’s X-Men to the Jews fighting back against “SJW Hitler’s Germany” (Really) [ 93]. When fellow creator and critic, Darryl Ayo, called Malin out for this, Ethan invited both of them onto his YouTube channel for a live debate with him as moderator[ 94]. When asked by Bleeding Cool News about what prompted Ethan’s invitation, Ayo said:
“In professional terms, nothing. There was no reason for Ethan Van Sciver to even be thinking about me, much less talking to me. That said, Ethan Van Sciver decided to invite me (and I don’t necessarily see it as an “invitation,” per se) to appear on his show after I had been highlighted and targeted for harassment by an online person called “Diversity and Comics.” At the time, “Diversity and Comics” had been focusing his attention on me and targeting me for abuse by his fans for about a week.
“The supposed purpose of Ethan Van Sciver’s initiation of contact was to discuss a superhero artist named Jon Malin, who had made bizarre comments earlier that day about Hitler being an “SJW,” which is a derisive term applied to liberals, progressives and leftists. The idea of Hitler, one of the most notorious and brutal right wing thugs in the twentieth century being equated with a term that essentially means “progressive” was appalling and many people throughout the comics industries, including, but not limited to me, expressed disgust at the comments of this Jon Malin person.
The response to the Comics Vs. Games 2 reveal has been incredible. So happy to hear that everyone’s just as psyched about Attract Mode’s upcoming return to Toronto as we are! BTW, have you seen the pieces for the art show that’s been making the rounds on Tumblr? A full rundown of participants involved will be disclosed soon, but in the meanwhile, at least you all know that Jovo Ve, Corey Lewis, and Natasha Allegri are included.
Back to Toronto; that city is simply the best. Been dying to return, the very moment Comics Vs. Games 1 wrapped up (feel free to search my blog for my detailed report). Not only is everyone super friendly, but the indie game scene is on fire (as evidenced by the just released Guacamelee, which is an early game of 2013 contender in my book), plus its various other art scenes are equally hawt. Speaking of…
Just found out that Diego Bergia’s LEPOS arcade project has been updated. Was introduced to the cancelled SNES game from an alternate universe by Annie Koyama, who published the accompanying art book; last wrote about it for GameSetWatch, back when it was first looking to become a real deal, playable game. The self-professed graffiti artist/independent animator/arcade enthusiast shared the video above last week, along with the following:
Whenever I’m in New York my home base is the Lower East Side, so for this next little teaser I chose the iconic Arlene’s Grocery as a backdrop. More importantly though, this clip introduces the one and only Bronx King CES to the LEPOS arcade project. Along with REVOK and GIANT, I’ve got three legendary motherfuckers down with this. BIG shoutout to them. Thank you!
Be sure to check Bergia’s Vimeo page for additional morsels of the upcoming game.
(continued from Part Three: https://medium.com/@willenglish/gate-movements-are-stupid-a-history-of-comicsgate-part-three-5e145cf29670)
And now we come to the worst part of this whole pathetic movement. Ethan has often described Comicsgate as the middle ground, the “rational alternative” and that the Movement is open to everyone, and they don’t harass anyone who is against them [ 8]. Dear readers, Ethan once again is not being honest with us. I went into this article, hoping that the stories of Comicsgates harassment and bigotry were greatly exaggerated. They were not. There is no rationality in Comicsgate. You are either with them or against them. And if you are against them, they will not be merciful.
Now, before going on, I need to point out that not everyone who supports Comicsgate has participated in these vile activities. Indeed, there are even some female creators who support them (notably artists Mindy Wheeler*and Martina Markota [ 153]). Nevertheless, this needs to be discussed, because it is absolutely disgusting. I won’t go over every incident, but I will talk about the ones that are the most well-known and publicized. If you wish to learn more details about their vile behavior, go this read:
In the meantime, let’s get this over with.

As you probably know, this past weekend saw the release of Dark Phoenix, the final entry in the single longest-running (19 years) consecutive comic book film franchise. Said franchise was first big-screen success for Marvel if you consciously choose to forget Blade exists. The franchise has been a billion-dollar box office boon for studio 20th Century Fox and its various directors, who ranged from alleged rapist Bryan Singer and alleged rapist Brett Ratner all the way to feminist-hater Matthew Vaughn.
I have yet to see the flick (and given the reported grosses, very few of you saw it either), but I can appreciate how far the series has come from the merely-rumored-about film discussed in various issues of Wizard magazine. Who’da thunk a funny book “inspired by” Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr. (yes, really — though it got both their philosophies wrong) would lead to a lucrative film series in which White people are all the central focus? So lucrative and influential is the film series that’s said to be a major factor in Disney’s bid to purchase 20th Century Fox in the first place.
But as this film version of the series comes to a close — setting the stage for their inevitable MCU introduction — I have but one question about what the future will bring:
Can we get a Storm with some kinks in her hair this time?

Our look back at the history of the superhero concludes.
The Silver Age
The 1950’s, thanks to the crusade of Dr. Fredric Wertham and the eventual Senate Subcommittee on Juvenile Delinquency almost saw the demise of superheroes. However, there were some bright spots in this dark time.
DC reimagined Flash and Green Lantern, creating whole new characters sharing the same name as their Golden Age counterparts. Showcase #4 (Oct. 1956), which reintroduced The Flash, is often seen as the start of the Silver Age. DC also introduced Supergirl and Kid Flash. There were a few original characters created during this time, Legion of Superheroes, Phantom Stranger, and Marvel Man (from the UK) being the most memorable.
The 1960’s saw an explosion of new superheroes. With the success of Justice League of America in 1960 publishers felt more confident launching new characters or reviving old ones. DC Comics introduced such superhero teams as Doom Patrol and Teen Titans; reinvented older characters like Hawkman and The Atom; and expanded the Bat Family with Batgirl; the 1960’s was Marvel’s decade.
Stela’s new graphic novel, Haven, brings superheroes to our stable of titles. Superheroes are ubiquitous these days but where did it all begin?
April 18, 1938, a new comic magazine appeared on newsstands, Action Comics #1. It also sported something new on the cover. A man in blue tights and a red cape throwing a car into a wall. The man was Superman and the superhero genre was born. Nothing like him had been seen before and the public loved it.
Before Superman appeared there were some characters who gave us certain superhero tropes. Putting aside mythological superhumans like Hercules or Cuchulainn and legendary heroes like Robin Hood, in the early 20th century we see the seeds of the superhero archetype.
In the 1903 play (and later novel series), The Scarlet Pimpernel, Baroness Orczy introduces us to the masked avenger and secret identities. The Scarlet Pimpernel is a spy and masked hero of the French Revolution, in the guise of a the shallow, dim-witted, dandy Sir Percy Blakeney, he is actually an expert swordsman and fearless agent of justice rescuing aristocats from the guillotine.
A millionaire playboy who dresses in dark clothes and a mask fights crime (sound familiar?) in the 1914 Jimmie Dale alias The Grey Seal, pulp stories (pulp magazines and novels were inexpensive publications). Jimmie is, at first, a bored socialite who breaks into homes and safes just to prove he can but later on uses his skills in lockpicking and disguise to bust crime.
Stela redesigned comics to be read on the mobile format. Here are some of the greatest comics and graphic novels that helped define the medium.
Osamu Tezuka, the father of manga, created the seminal Astro Boy in 1952. Osamu started the manga revolution in 1947 but Astro Boy solidified the medium in Japan. He is the most enduring character in manga.
The first book to use the term “graphic novel” used by Will Eisner (along with “sequential art”) to differentiate it from the sea of superhero titles. The book tells various stories of the poor Jewish residents of the mythical Dropsie Avenue.
Spider-Man came swinging into the public consciousness with this comic. Excelsior!
Company-wide events are common now but Crisis on Infinite Earths was the first. In the late 80’s DC’s continuity was a mess, there were a muddle of various alternate universes, multiple versions of the heroes, and overall confusion. Crisis fixed all this by resetting all the titles and heroes.

In today’s increasingly screen-based society children need additional skills to process all of the information thrown at them. One of these skills–visual literacy–allows children to take in graphic information and interpret meaning from those images, much in the same way they would interpret meaning from sentences or paragraphs of text. Graphic novels provide an incredible learning tool for this skillset. They contain all of the rich emotional content of full-text middle grade novels but presented in a different medium. Seeing characters process emotions and looking at the difference between what they say and what their body language shows provides vital social-emotional learning. Plus, at the end of the day as anyone who’s ever read a comic book can tell you, graphic novels are just plain fun! Check out these fantastic new graphic novels and share them with your kids!

Newell is always getting into trouble–whether it’s showing up tardy for most of the year, or mocking his teachers while authoritarian Mr. Todd is standing right behind him. When disaster strikes and Newell finds himself on track to summer school, he’s given one last minute option to get out of it–participating in the upcoming Talent Show. The only problem is that he doesn’t technically have a talent to show. Yikes.

Now let’s get to those new books!
Hotel Dare is exactly the sort of story I would have gobbled up when I was in grade school. As regular readers have no doubt heard far too many times by now, I’m always on the lookout for younger reader-friendly titles that I could share with my stepdaughter, and I found that here. Hotel Dare features three kids who are grappling with who they are, and how aspects of their identity (queerness, anxiety, adopted family dynamics) inter-relate with each other. This serves to enrich the wonderful plot, set in a run-down hotel that also happens to have portals to other universes. The story is fast-paced, exciting, and fun, while never losing the wonderful character dynamics and the gorgeous art. Hotel Dare is wonderfully fun, and I highly recommend it to fans of fantasy and young adult adventure.
Dark Horse is getting ready to release omnibus versions of Dept. H, and I was curious to learn more about the series. This first volume gives a pretty good sense of the series. Dept. H begins as a murder mystery at a deep-sea research base, but begins to become much more as the deep ocean begins to take on a role beyond just setting. Matt Kindt’s strengths as a writer are quite clear here, with building tension and complex characters. The art is at times a little obtuse, but generally creates a thematic atmosphere that fits the story fantastically. I found Dept. H to be a bit slow, so I’m not sure if I will follow along with the rest of the series, but it will likely appeal to offbeat mystery fans.
The Whispering Dark was another early read for me over at Comic Book Corner. The first issue drew me in, and I knew I wanted to see how it all worked out. What I found was that The Whispering Dark is a solid story that falls short of greatness through a lack of consistent identity. The story starts with a pretty heavy sense of soldiers having to go to dark places to survive a near-future conflict, and eventually the story shifts to demons in the last quarter or so of the collection. While the writing was solid, the arcane evil that became a part of the plot felt like an unnecessary addition that detracted from the plot. The revelations about the characters playing differently roles than originally surmised was much more satisfying, to me, than the supernatural horror element. The Whispering Dark does a great job of showing the horrors of war, and didn’t need to include demons to make its point.
